When is a pattern considered Zen and when is it not?

Sometimes it can be a hard call. Basically, to get into zen-mode you need repetition. Repeating the same strokes over and over has this meditating effect.

Drawing a multitude of orbs can be very zen. If you however draw an orb, followed by a straight line, followed by an orb, the zen effect is gone. Auras are very zen! Grid based patterns CAN be very zen – depending on the step-out. If the step-out requires you to repeat the same stroke in multiple parts of the grid, it is zen. But if the step-out requires to complete each grid section using different shapes, it is not zen!
